Applying Evidence Based Practice
Being physically active is essential for good health. But is there a difference between running on a treadmill inside your local gym and going for a jog through the park?
A systematic review by Jo Thompson Coon and colleagues (2011) concluded that physical activity done outdoors is more beneficial to our physical and mental well-being than the same activity done indoors!
The National Alliance on Mental Illness lists exercise as a "Complimentary and Alternative Medicine" treatment for depression, when used in combination with psychotherapy and medication
For current research, go to the National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health website and search for the treatment "exercise"
Hiking: A prescription for wellness
A study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine recommends that health care practitioners prescribe hiking to their patients as an inexpensive and effective way to increase physical activity, restore mental and emotional health and increase time spent with friends (Mitten et al, 2016)
BE PREPARED!
When the unexpected happens, having a few essential items with you can make a huge difference. Don't go out into the wilderness without them!
